About This Course
Introduction to UNIX on a Digital Network Control System
Prerequisites

Course Content
The course outline is as follows:
I. Discuss UNIX, UNIX standardization, and Sun Solaris.
II. Introduce shell scripts, commands, common shells, and proper shell command syntax
as well as the execution of shell commands.
III. Discuss sessions and demonstrate logging in/out of a UNIX system using the bash
shell.
IV. Discussion of directory structure, working with files and directories, creating and
removing directories, listing files and directories, links, redirection, and appending
files.
V. List file permissions, discuss file ownership, set permissions, discuss symbolic
permissions.
VI. Use the command line to introduce and demonstrate the use of wildcards, find, grep,
compression and decompression commands, and manual pages.
VII. Discuss and demonstrate remote connection types, as well as FTP and its uses.
VIII. Introduce various text editors and focus on proficient usage of the vi editor by
introducing editing, navigation, and global commands, then reinforcing lecture through
hands-on exercises.
IX. Introduce some of the more advanced commands of UNIX such as task-specific
commands, archiving, networking, file and directory, manipulation and navigation, and
diagnostic reports and reinforce learning with hands-on exercises.
