The 'Network of Networks'
The Internet's early pioneers envisioned the Internet not as a single worldwide network, but as a combination of networks that would form a "network of networks" crisscrossing the globe. This vision is about to become reality, and the result will fuel major growth opportunities for the Internet economy, as companies, countries, and people invent new ways of using the Internet to either gain competitive advantage or improve the prospects for prosperity. As companies build their futures, they will create combinations of internal networks, service provider networks, and the Internet. If designed properly, the combinations—and their features, functions, and capabilities—will be transparent to customers, partners, and employees. This will create unprecedented opportunities for exploring new and innovative ways of improving productivity and creating new forms of revenue. As the only company with a leadership position in each of the market segments related to the world's network of networks, we want to use this issue of the Executive Thought Leadership Quarterly to explore its implications. You can learn more about this topic from our Executive Thought Leadership Quarterly interview with Kevin Kelly, former editor-in-chief of Wired Magazine and author of the best-selling book New Rules for the New Economy. Kelly is one of the visionaries of the Internet economy, and he shares with us how the network of networks is creating a thousand points of opportunity for people and companies. I hope you enjoy this issue of the Executive Thought Leadership Quarterly . Sincerely, John T. Chambers |
