IntelliShield Analysis

This vulnerability primarily concerns developers of components and controls because it is a vulnerability included in public libraries distributed in Microsoft Visual Studio.? Developers of software that include ATL code may have introduced this vulnerability into their software.? Developers are encouraged to contact the Microsoft Developer Network for more information on how to identify vulnerable code and take corrective action for their software.

Microsoft has addressed this vulnerability by ensuring that VariantClear is called only by initialized variants and has provided developers an updated version of ATL.

The Cisco Applied Intelligence team has created an Applied Mitigation Bulletin to address vulnerabilities that Microsoft disclosed in the August 2009 security bulletin release.? This Cisco bulletin, which assists administrators in identifying or mitigating these vulnerabilities using Cisco devices, is available at the following link: Cisco Applied Mitigation Bulletin: Microsoft Security Bulletin Release for August 2009?

Impact

An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user.? If that user holds administrative rights, the attacker could completely compromise the vulnerable system.

Technical Information

The vulnerability is due to incorrectly initialized ATL headers.? ATL headers are incorrectly initialized when an attacker forces VariantClear to be called on a VARIANT that has not been correctly initialized.? If the vulnerable system was built with components and controls that use Visual Studio ATL, the attacker could control the process of VariantClear.

An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by convincing a user to view a malicious website.? When viewed, content that contains the component or control could trigger this vulnerability.? A successful exploit could allow the attacker to obtain the same rights as the user who is logged in.

The Industry Consortium for Advancement of Security on the Internet (ICASI) is collaborating with a third party to offer a scanning service to help developers identify potential vulnerabilities in their code.? More information is available at the following link: ICASI.

Safeguards

Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.

Developers are encouraged to correct vulnerable software that may include the affected ATL code.

Additional safeguards are available in Microsoft Security Advisory 973882.

Patches/Software

Microsoft customers can obtain updates directly by using the links in the security bulletin.? These updates are also distributed by Windows automatic update features and available on the Windows Update website.?
