Functional code that exploits the Novell eDirectory remote code execution vulnerability is publicly available.
Description
Novell eDirectory version 8.8 SP5 contains a vulnerability that could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the targeted system or cause a denial of service (DoS) condition.
The vulnerability exists because the affected software does not perform sufficient boundary checks on user-supplied data. An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by sending crafted HTTP requests to the affected application. Processing the crafted requests could result in a buffer overflow that corrupts memory. The attacker could take advantage of the memory corruption to execute arbitrary code on the targeted system with SYSTEM privileges. Failed attempts at code execution could cause a DoS condition.
Functional code that exploits this vulnerability is publicly available.
Novell has not confirmed this vulnerability and updated software is not available.
Warning Indicators
Novell eDirectory version 8.8 SP5 is vulnerable. Other versions may also be affected.
IntelliShield Analysis
To exploit the vulnerability, an attacker needs to be authenticated to the vulnerable application. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges. As a result, a complete system compromise could be possible.
Vendor Announcements
Vendor announcements are not available.
Impact
An authenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to cause a DoS condition or execute arbitrary code on the targeted system with SYSTEM privileges. A successful exploit could lead to a complete system compromise.
Technical Information
This vulnerability exists because the /dhost/httpstk component of the affected software does not perform sufficient boundary checks on user-supplied input.
An authenticated, remote attacker could exploit the vulnerability by sending crafted HTTP requests that pass overly large values to the sadminpwd and verifypwd parameters. Processing the crafted requests could result in a stack-based buffer overflow that corrupts memory. The attacker could take advantage of the memory corruption to execute arbitrary code on the targeted system with SYSTEM privileges.
