Severity: Moderate Damage
CVSS Base:9.3 CVSS Calculator
CVSS Version 2
CVSS Temporal:7.3

Version Summary:

Cisco WebEx Recording Format Player contains a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code. Updates are available.

Description

Cisco WebEx Recording Format (WRF) Player contains a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on a targeted system.

The vulnerability is due to a buffer overflow in the WRF Player. An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by convincing a user to view a malicious file. If successful, the attacker could execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the targeted user.

Cisco has confirmed the vulnerability in a security advisory and released updated software.

Warning Indicators

The following Cisco WRF players on Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS X, and Linux platforms are vulnerable:

  • Client builds 28.0.0 (T28 L10N)
  • Client builds 27.32.1 (T27 LD SP32 CP1) and prior
  • Client builds 27.25.10 (T27 LC SP25 EP10) and prior

IntelliShield Analysis

WRF files store recordings of WebEx meetings and have a .wrf file extension.  The WRF Player is an application that provides playback and edit functionality for recorded .wrf files.

The vulnerability cannot be triggered by users attending a WebEx session. To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker would need to convince a user to play a malicious .wrf file. An attacker may provide a file to the user and persuade the user to open or execute the file by using misleading language or instructions.

Cisco indicates through the CVSS score that proof-of-concept code exists; however, the code is not known to be publicly available.

Vendor Announcements

Cisco has released a security advisory for Cisco bug ID CSCtz72977 at the following link: cisco-sa-20120627-webex

Impact

An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on a targeted system with the privileges of the user. If the user holds elevated privileges, successful code execution could result in a complete system compromise.

Technical Information

The vulnerability exists because the affected software improperly handles .wrf files, resulting in a heap-based buffer overflow.

An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by convincing a targeted user to open a crafted .wrf file with the affected application. Processing the malicious file could result in a buffer overflow error that could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the system with the privileges of the user who is logged in.

Safeguards

Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.
