HP Operations Agent for NonStop contains a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on a targeted system. Updates are not available.
Description
HP Operations Agent for NonStop contains a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on a targeted system.
The vulnerability exists because the affected application performs insufficient boundary checks on user-supplied input. An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted HEALTHmessage packets to the targeted system. An exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the system under the context of the SYSTEM user.
HP has not confirmed this vulnerability and software updates are not available.
Warning Indicators
HP Operations Agent for NonStop version 5.0 is vulnerable. Other versions may also be vulnerable.
IntelliShield Analysis
In a typical network configuration, the systems are behind corporate firewalls. To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must have access to a trusted, internal network. This access requirement decreases the likelihood of a successful exploit.
Vendor Announcements
Vendor announcements are not available.
Impact
An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code in the security context of the SYSTEM user running the affected software.
Technical Information
The vulnerability exists because the ELinkService process in the affected application fails to perform sufficient boundary checks on input from HEALTH message packets before it copies the input to a fixed-size stack buffer.
An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit the vulnerability by transmitting crafted HEALTH message packets to the affected application. Processing these packets could result in a buffer overflow, corrupting memory. The attacker could leverage the buffer overflow to execute arbitrary code on the targeted system with the privileges of the SYSTEM user.
