Version Summary:Cisco Unified MeetingPlace Web Conferencing contains a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service condition on a targeted device. Updates are available.

Description
Cisco Unified MeetingPlace Web Conferencing contains a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition.

The vulnerability is due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input to certain parameters passed to the affected software via an HTTP POST request. An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending HTTP POST requests with crafted parameters to the targeted device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause the affected software to become unresponsive to legitimate user requests, resulting in a DoS condition.

Cisco has confirmed these vulnerabilities in a security advisory and released updated software.

Warning Indicators
Cisco Unified MeetingPlace Web Conferencing versions prior to 7.0, 7.0, 7.1, 8.0, and 8.5 are vulnerable.

IntelliShield Analysis
To exploit the vulnerability, the attacker must send malicious requests to the targeted system, likely requiring the attacker to access trusted, internal networks. This access requirement limits the likelihood of a successful exploit.

Cisco indicates through the CVSS score that functional exploit code exists; however, the code is not known to be publicly available.

Vendor Announcements
Cisco has released a security advisory for bug ID CSCua66341 at the following link: cisco-sa-20121031-mp

Impact
An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to cause the affected software to become unresponsive to legitimate user requests, resulting in a DoS condition.

Technical Information
The vulnerability is due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input to certain parameters passed to the affected software via the HTTP POST method, which can result in a buffer overrun memory error condition.

An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending HTTP POST requests that contain crafted parameters to the targeted system. When the malicious parameters are processed by the affected software, a memory error condition could occur that the attacker could use to cause the affected software to become unresponsive to legitimate user requests, resulting in a DoS condition.

Safeguards
Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.

Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to have network access.

Administrators may consider using IP-based access control lists (ACLs) to allow only trusted systems to access the affected systems.

Administrators can help protect affected systems from external attacks by using a solid firewall strategy.

Administrators are advised to monitor critical systems.
