Apache Tomcat FORM Authenticator Security Constraint Bypass Issue

Threat Type:IntelliShield: Security Issue Alert
IntelliShield ID:27554
Version:14
First Published:2012 December 05 18:15 GMT
Last Published:2013 April 29 15:21 GMT
Port: Not available
CVE:CVE-2012-3546
BugTraq ID:56812
Urgency:Unlikely Use
Credibility:Confirmed
Severity:Mild Damage

Version Summary:VMware has re-released a security advisory and updated software to address the Apache Tomcat FORM authenticator security constraint bypass issue.

Description
Apache Tomcat contains an issue that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to bypass security restrictions on a targeted system.

The issue is due to insufficient security constraint checks imposed by the FORM authenticator used by the affected software. An unauthenticated, remote attacker using FORM authentication could exploit this issue to bypass the security constraint checks in the FORM authenticator by appending /j_security_check to the end of a URL if a certain component has called request.setUserPrincipal() before the call to FormAuthenticator#authenticate(). As a result, an attacker could submit crafted FORM authentication requests to the affected application, that could allow the attacker to compromise the targeted system.

Apache has confirmed this issue in security advisories Apache Tomcat 6 and Apache Tomcat 7 and has released software updates.

Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.

Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to have network access.

Administrators may consider using IP-based access control lists (ACLs) to allow only trusted systems to access the affected systems.
