Severity:Mild Damage
CVSS Base:5.0 CVSS Calculator
CVSS Version 2.0
CVSS Temporal:3.7

Version Summary:HP has released an additional security bulletin and updated software to address the Apache Tomcat NIO connector request processing denial of service vulnerability.

Description
Apache Tomcat server contains a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition.

The vulnerability is due to insufficient validation and sanitization of user-supplied input processed by the NIO connector in the affected software. An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit the vulnerability by submitting crafted HTTP requests to the affected application. If successful, an attacker could cause an infinite loop in the affected application, resulting in a DoS condition.

Apache has confirmed this vulnerability and released software updates.

Warning Indicators
Apache Tomcat server versions 6.0.35 and prior and 7.0.27 and prior are vulnerable.

IntelliShield Analysis
To exploit the vulnerability, the attacker may need to transmit crafted HTTP requests to the targeted system, which may require access to trusted, internal networks. This access restriction could limit the likelihood of a successful exploit.

Impact
An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit the vulnerability to cause the affected application server to stop responding, resulting in a DoS condition.

Technical Information
The vulnerability is due to insufficient validation and sanitization of user-supplied input processed by the NIO connector with sendfile and HTTPS enabled.

An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit the vulnerability by submitting crafted HTTP requests to the affected application. If successful, an attacker could cause the affected client to break the connection while reading the response, which could cause an infinite loop in the affected application and result in a DoS condition.

Safeguards
Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.

Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to have network access.

Administrators may consider using IP-based access control lists (ACLs) to allow only trusted systems to access the affected systems.

Administrators are advised to monitor affected systems.
