Description
Cisco Prime LAN Management Solution (LMS) Virtual Appliance contains a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands.

The vulnerability is due to improper validation of authentication and authorization commands processed by the affected software. An unauthenticated, remote attacker who can connect to an affected system could exploit the vulnerability to execute arbitrary commands on the system with the privileges of the root user. Successful exploitation could result in a complete system compromise.

Functional code that demonstrates an exploit of this vulnerability is available as a part of the Metasploit framework.

Cisco has confirmed this vulnerability and software updates are available.

Impact
An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit the vulnerability to execute arbitrary commands on a targeted system with the privileges of the root user. Successful exploitation could result in a complete system compromise.
 
Technical Information
The vulnerability is due to improper validation of authentication and authorization commands sent to certain TCP ports. An attacker who can access the remote shell (rsh) service; which requires client connections to use a privileged source port, can execute arbitrary commands with privileges of the root account. The vulnerability affects only Linux-based Cisco Prime LMS Virtual Appliances.

An unauthenticated, remote attacker who can connect to an affected system could exploit the vulnerability to execute arbitrary commands on the system with the privileges of the root user. Successful exploitation could result in a complete system compromise.
 
Safeguards
Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.

Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to have network access.

Administrators may consider using IP-based access control lists (ACLs) to allow only trusted systems to access the affected systems.

Administrators are advised to monitor affected systems.
