Version Summary:Cisco Wireless LAN Controller-managed Cisco Wireless Access Points contain a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service condition on a targeted system. Updates are available.

Description
Cisco Wireless LAN Controller-managed Cisco Wireless Access Points (APs) contain a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition.

The vulnerability is due to improper handling of crafted Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) packets by the Cisco WLC AP software. An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit the vulnerability by sending crafted SIP packets to a targeted device. A successful attack could allow the attacker to cause the device to reload, resulting in a DoS condition for legitimate users.

Cisco has confirmed the vulnerability in a security advisory and released software updates.

Warning Indicators
The following Cisco products are affected:
  • Cisco WLC Software version 7.2 prior to 7.2.103.0
  • Cisco WLC Software version 7.1 prior to 7.1.91.0
  • Cisco WLC Software version 7.0 prior to 7.0.220.0

IntelliShield Analysis
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must be able submit crafted SIP packets to the targeted device, likely requiring the attacker to access trusted, internal networks. This access requirement limits the likelihood of a successful exploit.

Cisco indicates through the CVSS score that functional exploit code exists; however, the code is not known to be publicly available.

Vendor Announcements
Cisco has released a security advisory for Cisco bug ID CSCts87659 at the following link: cisco-sa-20130123-wlc

Impact
An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit the vulnerability to cause the targeted device to reload, resulting in a DoS condition for legitimate users. Repeated exploitation could result in a sustained DoS condition.

Technical Information
The vulnerability is due to improper handling of crafted SIP packets by the Cisco WLC AP software.

An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit the vulnerability by sending crafted SIP packets to a targeted device. When the malicious packets are processed by the affected software, the device may reload, resulting in a DoS condition for legitimate users. Repeated exploitation could result in a sustained DoS condition.

Safeguards
Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.

Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to have network access.
