Version Summary:Apple has released an additional security advisory and updated software to address the EUC-JP encoding cross-site scripting vulnerability in multiple browser products.

Description
Multiple browser products contain a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to conduct cross-site scripting attack on the targeted system.

The vulnerability is due to improper validation of user-supplied input by the affected software. An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by persuading a user to view a malicious web page that contains crafted data. Successful exploitation could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary script code in the user's browser and steal sensitive information, such as session tokens or authentication cookies.

The vendors have confirmed this vulnerability and updates are available.

Warning Indicators
The following products are vulnerable:
  • Google Chrome versions prior to 18.0.1025.142
  • Apple iOS versions prior to 6.1 with iPhone 3GS and later, iPod touch (4th generation) and later, iPad 2 and later

IntelliShield Analysis
To exploit the vulnerability, the attacker may provide a link that directs a user to a malicious site and use misleading language or instructions to persuade the user to follow the provided link.

Successful exploitation could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary script code in the user's browser and steal sensitive information, such as session tokens or authentication cookies.

Technical Information
The vulnerability is due to improper handling of the Extended UNIX Code-Japanese (EUC-JP) encoding by the affected software. While handling the URL with EUC-JP encoding, the affected software fails to perform sufficient validation on the user-supplied input content before returning it to the user. This error could lead to execution of arbitrary script code.

An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by persuading a user to view a malicious web page that contains crafted data. Successful exploitation could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary script code in the user's browser and steal sensitive information, such as session tokens or authentication cookies.
