ISC BIND Crafted Regular Expression Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability

Threat Type:CWE-399: Resource Management Errors
IntelliShield ID:28730
Version:5
First Published:2013 March 26 19:23 GMT
Last Published:2013 September 16 13:35 GMT
Port: Not available
CVE:CVE-2013-2266
BugTraq ID:58736
Urgency:Unlikely Use
Credibility:Confirmed
Severity:Mild Damage
CVSS Base:7.8 CVSS Calculator
CVSS Version 2.0
CVSS Temporal:5.8

Version Summary:Apple has released a security advisory and updated software to address the ISC BIND crafted regular expression remote denial of service vulnerability.

Description
ISC BIND contains a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition.

The vulnerability is due to an unspecified error in a library used by the affected software. An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by submitting a crafted regular expression to be processed by the affected application. If successful, the attacker could cause excessive memory consumption by the named process, which could cause this process or other services linked to the vulnerable library to crash, resulting in a DoS condition.

ISC has confirmed this vulnerability and released updated software.

Warning Indicators
The following ISC BIND versions are vulnerable while running on UNIX platforms:
  • All versions on BIND versions 9.7
  • BIND versions 9.8.0. through 9.8.5b1
  • BIND versions 9.9.0. through 9.9.3b1

IntelliShield Analysis
Depending on the network configuration, the attacker may need access to trusted, internal networks to send the regular expressions to the affected server. This access requirement could limit the likelihood of a successful exploit.

ISC indicates that BIND 9.7 has reached end of life and is no longer receiving security fixes. Administrators are advised to upgrade to a supported version of BIND. In addition, a workaround is available for BIND 9.7 by recompiling the source with regular expression support disabled.

Impact
An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to cause the named process to terminate unexpectedly on a targeted system, resulting in a DoS condition. Other services that are running on the vulnerable system could also be affected through system resource exhaustion.

Technical Information
The vulnerability is due to an unspecified error in a library used by the affected software. The error could trigger the named process used by the affected software to consume excessive memory, causing this process to crash and resulting in a DoS condition.

Safeguards
Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.

Administrators are advised to implement an intrusion prevention system (IPS) or intrusion detection system (IDS) to help detect and prevent attacks that attempt to exploit this vulnerability.

Administrators may consider using IP-based access control lists (ACLs) to allow only trusted systems to access the affected systems.

Administrators may consider re-compiling the source with regular expression support disabled. Details on disabling regular expression support could be found in the vendor's knowledgebase article in the Vendor Announcements section.

Administrators are advised to monitor affected systems.
