Version Summary:Cisco IOS XR Software contains a vulnerability that could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service condition. Updates are available.

Description
A vulnerability in the SNMP module of Cisco IOS XR could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to trigger a memory leak in the SNMP process.

The vulnerability is due to insufficient checking of data input. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted SNMP packets to the device. An exploit could allow the attacker to cause a memory leak in the SNMP process. The SNMP process will restart after it consumes its allocated memory.

Cisco has confirmed the vulnerability in a security notice and software updates are available.

Warning Indicators
At the time this alert was first published, Cisco IOS XR Software versions 4.3 and prior were vulnerable. Later versions of Cisco IOS XR Software may also be affected.

IntelliShield Analysis
To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker must authenticate to a targeted device to send crafted SNMP packets. This access requirement limits the possibility of a successful exploit.

Customers are advised to review the bug report in the Vendor Announcements section for a current list of affected versions.

Cisco indicates through the CVSS score that functional exploit code exists; however, the code is not known to be publicly available.

Vendor Announcements
Cisco has released a security notice for bug ID CSCue31546 at the following link: CVE-2013-1216

Impact
An authenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to trigger a memory leak in the SNMP process, causing the process to restart after it consumes its allocated memory and resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition.

Technical Information
The vulnerability is due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input processed by the affected software.

An authenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted SNMP packets to a targeted system. If successful, the attacker could trigger a memory leak in the SNMP process, which could cause the process to restart after it consumes its allocated memory and result in a DoS condition.

Safeguards
Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.

It is critical to prevent unauthorized direct communication to network devices. Restrict network traffic destined for the network infrastructure to protect against reconnaissance and DoS attacks. For configuration details, consult Protecting Your Core: Infrastructure Protection Access Control Lists.

Administrators are advised to allow only privileged users to access administration or management systems.

Administrators are advised to monitor affected systems.
