Version Summary:Cisco Unified Customer Voice Portal Software contains a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to conduct directory traversal attacks. Updates are available.

Description
A vulnerability exists in Resource Manager (ORM) of Cisco Unified Customer Voice Portal (CVP) that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to overwrite system files.

The vulnerability is due to an incorrect parameter check. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted request to the Resource Manager.

Cisco has confirmed the vulnerability in a security advisory and released software updates.

Warning Indicators
Cisco Unified CVP Software versions prior to 9.0.1 ES 11 are vulnerable.

IntelliShield Analysis
To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker may need access to a trusted, internal network in order to send crafted requests to the targeted device. This access requirement reduces the probability of a successful exploit attempt.

Cisco indicates through the CVSS score that functional exploit code exists; however, the code is not known to be publicly available.

Vendor Announcements
Cisco has released a security advisory for bug ID CSCub38369 at the following link: cisco-sa-20130508-cvp

Impact
An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to launch directory traversal attacks and overwrite system files on a targeted device. Successful exploitation could be leveraged to conduct further attacks.

Technical Information
The vulnerability is due to an incorrect parameter check by the Resource Manager component of the affected software.

An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted request to the Resource Manager component of the affected software on the targeted device. If successful, the attacker could have the ability to overwrite arbitrary system files on the targeted device, which could be used to conduct further attacks.

Safeguards
Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.

Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to have network access.

Administrators may consider using IP-based access control lists (ACLs) to allow only trusted systems to access the affected systems.

The Cisco Applied Intelligence team has created the following companion document to guide administrators in identifying and mitigating attempts to exploit this vulnerability prior to applying updated software: Identifying and Mitigating Exploitation of the Multiple Vulnerabilities in Cisco Unified Customer Voice Portal Software

Administrators are advised to monitor affected systems.
