A vulnerability in the web-based management interface of the Symantec Brightmail Gateway contains a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to conduct cross-site scripting attacks.
The vulnerability is due to insufficient sanitation of user-supplied input by the affected software. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by convincing a user to follow a malicious website. An exploit could allow an attacker to conduct cross-site scripting attacks on the targeted system and steal sensitive information, such as authentication cookies or recently submitted data.
Symantec has confirmed this vulnerability, but updated software is not available.
Symantec Brightmail Gateway versions prior to 10.0 are vulnerable.
To exploit the vulnerability, the attacker may provide a link that directs a user to a malicious site and use misleading language or instructions to convince the user to follow the provided link.
Symantec Brightmail 9.5.x is at the end of life. Users are advised to migrate to Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.0.x.
