Description
A vulnerability in the Administration pages of Cisco Access Control System (ACS) could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to conduct a cross-site scripting (XSS) attack against a user of the web interface of the affected system.

The vulnerability is due to insufficient input validation of a parameter. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by convincing the user to access a malicious link.

Cisco has confirmed this vulnerability in a security notice and released software updates.
 
Warning Indicators
At the time this alert was first published, Cisco Secure Access Control System versions 5.3 and 5.4 were vulnerable. Other versions of Cisco Secure Access Control System may also be affected.

To exploit the vulnerability, the attacker may provide a link that directs a user to a malicious site and use misleading language or instructions to persuade the user to follow the provided link.

Impact
An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to conduct cross-site scripting attacks, allowing the attacker to gain access to sensitive browser-based information.
 
Technical Information

The vulnerability is due to improper validation of user-supplied input to parameters used by the affected application.

An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by convincing a targeted user to follow a link designed to submit malicious input to the vulnerable parameters. The application may return the malicious parameters to the user within the security context of the affected application, allowing the attacker to execute arbitrary script or HTML code in the user's browser.

 
Safeguards

Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.

Users are advised not to open email messages from suspicious or unrecognized sources. If users cannot verify that links or attachments included in email messages are safe, they are advised not to open them.

Administrators are advised to monitor affected systems.
