Threat Type:CWE-399: Resource Management Errors
IntelliShield ID:30426
Version:1
First Published:2013 August 21 16:08 GMT
Last Published:2013 August 21 16:08 GMT
Port: 5060, 5061
CVE:CVE-2013-3453
Urgency:Unlikely Use
Credibility:Confirmed
Severity:Mild Damage
CVSS Base:7.8 CVSS Calculator
CVSS Version 2.0
CVSS Temporal:6.4

Version Summary:Cisco Unified Communications Manager IM and Presence Service contains a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service condition. Updates are available.

Description
Cisco Unified Communications Manager IM and Presence Service contains a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service on an affected device.

The vulnerability is due to a memory leak. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by generating a large number of connections to TCP port 5060 and 5061. Successful exploitation could cause a memory leak on an affected device that could interrupt presence services, resulting in a DoS condition.

Cisco has confirmed the vulnerability in a security advisory and has released software updates.

Warning Indicators
Cisco Unified Communications Manager IM and Presence Service versions prior to 9.1(2) are affected.

IntelliShield Analysis
To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker may require access to trusted, internal networks to generate a large number of TCP connections to a targeted device. This access limitation could limit the likelihood of a successful exploit.

Cisco indicates through the CVSS score that functional exploit code exists; however, the code is not known to be publicly available.

Cisco Unified Communications Manager IM and Presence Service version 9.1(2) is targeted for release in mid-September 2013.

Vendor Announcements
Cisco has released a security advisory for bug ID CSCud84959 at the following link: cisco-sa-20130821-cup

Impact
An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to cause a memory leak that could interrupt services on an affected device, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition.

Technical Information
The vulnerability is due to a memory leak on the affected software.

An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by generating a large number of TCP connections to TCP port 5060 or 5061. Successful exploitation could cause a memory leak on an affected device that could interrupt presence services, resulting in a DoS condition.

Safeguards
Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.

Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to have network access.

Administrators can help protect affected systems from external attacks by using a solid firewall strategy.

To mitigate denial of service attacks, apply hardware rate limiter features to limit packets that require CPU processing. See vendor documentation for specific configuration instructions. For hardware rate limiting configuration details, see Cisco Catalyst 6500 Denial of Service (DoS) Protection Configuration Guide.

The Cisco Applied Intelligence team has created the following companion document to guide administrators in identifying and mitigating attempts to exploit this vulnerability prior to applying updated software: Identifying and Mitigating the Cisco Unified Communications Manager IM and Presence Service Denial of Service Vulnerability

Administrators are advised to monitor affected systems.
