Version Summary:Cisco Prime Central for Hosted Collaboration Solution Assurance contains a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service condition. Updates are available.

Description
Cisco Prime Central for Hosted Collaboration Solution (HCS) Assurance contains a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition.

The vulnerability is due to the improper handling of TCP packets sent to the Prime Central Ephemeral Java Port (port 44444). An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a large amount of TCP packets to the affected port. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to consume all available memory and cause a DoS condition on the affected system.

Cisco has confirmed the vulnerability in a security advisory and has released software updates.

Warning Indicators
Cisco Prime Central for HCS Assurance versions prior to 9.1 are affected.

IntelliShield Analysis
Cisco Prime Central for HCS Assurance was formerly known as Cisco Hosted Collaboration Mediation (HCM).

The attacker may require access to trusted, internal networks to conduct a TCP connection flood attack. This access limitation could limit the likelihood of a successful exploit.

Cisco indicates through the CVSS score that functional exploit code exists; however, the code is not known to be publicly available.

Vendor Announcements
Cisco has released a security advisory for bug ID CSCtz92776 at the following link: cisco-sa-20130821-hcm

Impact
An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to cause an affected device to consume excessive amounts of memory resources which could prevent access to the web GUI and cause out-of-memory exceptions when executing basic commands, resulting in a DoS condition.

Technical Information
The vulnerability is due to excessive memory consumption while processing large amounts of TCP packets via TCP port 44444 on an affected device.

An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending large amounts of TCP packets via TCP port 44444 to an affected device. Such action could allow the attacker to execute a sustained TCP flood which could exhaust memory on an affected device, resulting in a DoS condition.

Safeguards
Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.

Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to have network access.

Administrators can help protect affected systems from external attacks by using a solid firewall strategy.

To mitigate denial of service attacks, apply hardware rate limiter features to limit packets that require CPU processing. See vendor documentation for specific configuration instructions. For hardware rate limiting configuration details, see Cisco Catalyst 6500 Denial of Service (DoS) Protection Configuration Guide.

Administrators are advised to monitor affected systems.

Patches/Software
