Version Summary:Cisco Unified Communications Manager contains a vulnerability that could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands on a targeted device. Updates are available.

Description
Cisco Unified Communications Manager contains a vulnerability that could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to cause a buffer overflow on an affected device.

The vulnerability is due to insufficient bounds checking performed by the affected software. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by overwriting an allocated memory buffer on an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to corrupt data, disrupt services, or run arbitrary commands.

Cisco has confirmed the vulnerability in a security advisory and has released software updates.

Warning Indicators
Cisco Unified Communications Manager 7.1(x), 8.5(x), 8.6(x), 9.0(x) and 9.1(x) are affected.

IntelliShield Analysis
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker requires authenticated access to the targeted system. Authenticated access may require the attacker to access trusted, internal networks. These access requirements could limit the likelihood of a successful exploit.

Cisco indicates through the CVSS score that functional exploit code exists; however, the code is not known to be publicly available. Cisco Unified Communications Manager version 8.0 reached the End of Software Maintenance on October 23, 2012. Customers using Cisco Unified Communications Manager 8.0(x) versions should contact their Cisco support team for assistance in upgrading to a supported version of Cisco Unified Communications Manager.

Vendor Announcements
Cisco has released a security advisory for bug ID CSCud54358 at the following link: cisco-sa-20130821-cucm

Impact
An authenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to corrupt data, disrupt services, or run arbitrary commands on a targeted device.

Technical Information
The vulnerability is due to insufficient bounds checking of an input buffer by the affected software.

An authenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by overwriting an allocated memory buffer on a targeted device. A buffer overflow memory corruption error could occur. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to corrupt data, disrupt services, or run arbitrary commands on the device. The ability to run arbitrary commands could allow the attacker to completely compromise the device.

Safeguards
Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.

Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to access local systems.

Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to have network access.

Administrators are advised to allow only privileged users to access administration or management systems.

Administrators may consider using IP-based access control lists (ACLs) to allow only trusted systems to access the affected systems.

Administrators are advised to monitor affected systems.
