IntelliShield ID:33102
Version:1
First Published:2014 March 05 16:12 GMT
Last Published:2014 March 05 16:12 GMT
Port: Not available
CVE:CVE-2014-0706
Urgency:Unlikely Use
Credibility:Confirmed
Severity:Mild Damage
CVSS Base:7.8 CVSS Calculator
CVSS Version 2.0
CVSS Temporal:6.4

Version Summary:Cisco Wireless LAN Controller contains a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service condition. Updates are available.

Description
A vulnerability in the Cisco WLC could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to trigger a critical error, resulting in a DoS condition while the device restarts.

This vulnerability is due to a failure to correctly process an Ethernet 802.11 frame. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a specially crafted Ethernet 802.11 frame. Repeated exploitation may result in a sustained DoS condition.

Cisco has confirmed the vulnerability in a security advisory and released software updates.

Warning Indicators
Cisco Wireless LAN Controller software versions prior to 7.2.115.2 and 7.4.110.0 are affected.

IntelliShield Analysis
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker may need access to trusted, internal networks to send crafted Ethernet 802.11 frames to an affected device. This access requirement may reduce the likelihood of a successful exploit.

Cisco indicates through the CVSS score that functional exploit code exists; however, the code is not known to be publicly available.

Vendor Announcements
Cisco has released a security advisory for Cisco bug ID CSCue87929 at the following link: cisco-sa-20140305-wlc

Impact
An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to cause an affected device to reload, resulting in a DoS condition.

Technical Information
This vulnerability is due to improper processing of Ethernet 802.11 frames by an affected device.

An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted Ethernet 802.11 frame to the targeted device. Processing the frame could cause a critical error in the device, resulting in a DoS condition. Repeated exploitation may result in a sustained DoS condition.

Safeguards
Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.

Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to have network access.

Administrators may consider using IP-based access control lists (ACLs) to allow only trusted systems to access the affected systems.

The Cisco Applied Intelligence team has created the following companion document to guide administrators in identifying and mitigating attempts to exploit this vulnerability prior to applying updated software: Identifying and Mitigating Exploitation of Multiple Vulnerabilities in Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers

Administrators are advised to monitor affected systems.
