Cisco Security has detected significant activity on August 29, 2013.
Cisco Security has detected significant activity related to spam email messages that claim to contain a fax message notification for the recipient. The text in the email message attempts to persuade the recipient to open the attachment and view the details. However, the .zip attachment contains a malicious .exe file that, when executed, attempts to infect the system with malicious code.
Email messages that are related to this threat (RuleID6944 and RuleID6944KVR) may contain the following files:
The Fax_08292013_821.exe file in the Fax_08292013_821.zip attachment has a file size of 16,384 bytes. The MD5 checksum, which is a unique identifier of the executable, is the following string: 0xA5295B885CF12D531584B77CDF5F0D13
The FAX_39827918_1829.exe file in the FAX_39827918_1829.zip attachment has a file size of 16,384 bytes. The MD5 checksum is the following string: 0x88969EDAD66820F1A19BCBC466F2A128
