A vulnerability in the command-line interface (CLI) of Cisco NX-OS Software could allow an authenticated, local attacker to access the contents of arbitrary files on the affected device.
The vulnerability is due to improper filtering of user input. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability to perform a directory traversal attack. An exploit could allow the attacker to access arbitrary files on an affected device.
Cisco has confirmed the vulnerability in a security notice; however, software updates are not available.
Indicators of Compromise
At the time this alert was first published, Cisco NX-OS Software versions 6.2(2a) and prior were vulnerable. Later versions of Cisco NX-OS Software may also be vulnerable.
The vulnerability is due to improper filtering of user input by a device running an affected version of Cisco NX-OS Software.
A local attacker could exploit this vulnerability to perform a directory traversal attack on a targeted device, which could be used to access arbitrary files. A successful exploit could be used to conduct further attacks.
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must have local access to a targeted device. This access requirement reduces the likelihood of a successful exploit.
Cisco indicates through the CVSS score that functional exploit code exists; however, the code is not known to be publicly available.
