Microsoft Office Publisher Local Machine Zone Privilege Escalation Vulnerability

CVSS:3.0/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H/E:P/RL:O/RC:C
-
A vulnerability in Microsoft Office Publisher could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code in a targeted Local Machine zone.
The vulnerability exists because the affected software fails to use available operating system (OS) functionality to lock down the Local Machine zone when instantiating Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) objects. An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by persuading a user to access a Publisher file that submits malicious input to the affected software. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code in the Local Machine zone.
Microsoft confirmed the vulnerability and released software updates.
-
To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker may use misleading language or instructions to persuade a user to access a file that submits malicious input to the affected software.
Microsoft addressed this vulnerability by ensuring the affected software locks down the Local Machine zone with available OS functionality.
