A vulnerability in Pivotal Software Spring Framework could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to conduct a cross-site tracing (XST) attack on a targeted system.
The vulnerability exists because the HiddenHttpMethodFilter class in the Spring MVC framework used by the affected software allows web applications to change the HTTP request method to any HTTP method, including the TRACE method. An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by convincing a user who is using a web application that has a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability to follow a link that submits malicious input to a targeted system. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to conduct an XST attack, which the attacker could use to access sensitive information, such as the user's credentials.
Pivotal Software has confirmed the vulnerability and released software updates.
To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker may provide a link that directs a user to a malicious site and may use misleading language or instructions to persuade the user to follow the link.
This vulnerability is exploitable only if a web application using an affected version of the Spring Framework has a pre-existing XSS vulnerability.
