A vulnerability in the Host-Guest File System (HGFS) driver used in VMware Tools could allow a local attacker to gain elevated privileges or access sensitive information on a targeted guest virtual machine.
The vulnerability is due to an out-of-bounds read condition in the HGFS driver that is used by the affected software. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by submitting malicious input to the affected application. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to access sensitive information or gain elevated privileges on the targeted guest system, which could be used to conduct further attacks.
VMware has confirmed the vulnerability and released software updates.
To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker must have user-level access to the targeted system. This access requirement could reduce the likelihood of a successful exploit.
This vulnerability affects systems where VMware Tools is running and file sharing is enabled.
Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.
Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to access local systems.
Administrators are advised to allow only privileged users to access administration or management systems.
Administrators are advised to monitor critical systems.
